Denti della Vecchia (CH) - 1 491 meters

Nr 5

We came around these peaks as part for the first time during a two peak hike which included Monte Boglia.

Perfect for a lunch break with a view, the mountain is on the border between Italy and Switzerland with its peak in Swiss territory.

We started the hike from Cureggia, and had a whole day on a clear hiking path which after having arrived to the Pian di Scagnfollows the route nr. 435 which is explained in the official guides of the CAS (Swiss Alpine Club) at page 338 of the 5th volume (Guida delle prealpi ticinesi) and shown on picture at page 339.

The first Time we did not really reach the highest point so it's actually debatable if it's correct to put it in the list as my 5th peak.

In fact, I wrote this first sentences above right when I started going into the mountains and at a time when I wasn't pushing myself to more complicated stuff.. but here I am..more or less 2 years later talking about the climb we did today.

As said before, there is also the possibility to reach the highest point of the highest peak of the Denti della Vecchia summit (the Sasso Grande) but there is a need for some climbing and the guide suggests to even bring a climbing rope with you as it's really exposed and slippery (path 436 explained at page 340 and shown at page 335) with at least a T5 level + a II climbing difficulty. Other comments are saying that it's possible to arrive to the top without any ropes but of course state that it's quite exposed.

We went without a rope and yes it is exposed but yes it was super fun and doable.. if you are afraid of heights i would definitely suggest to not try it, the risk of falling is very high.

Level of the normal hike: T2

Level of Sasso Grande; T5 hiking grading and II (LD) Mountaineering/climbing grade.
